IT will make a difference….

Organization has hit me this morning while I’m relaxing at the beach!  Did I say relaxing?  I can’t relax until this task is done….

Now, I feel such a sense of accomplishment!

I have to be honest, it drives me NUTS when I arrive at our Beach Townhome and the Kitchen storage is in chaos!  We rent our place, “Paradise at Barrier Dunes”, and renters get a little UNorganized by default.  It’s only as organized as the last person in the unit, really….and after a Summer filled with renters, it was the worst chaos that it has ever been! So the timing is right for me to take action!

Interested in becoming one of our visitors in our little corner of Paradise?  http://www.vrbo.com/120257

Not to be outdone on this trip, I finally remembered to bring my label maker and do some cleaning out, reorganizing, labeling, and having fun! NOW, there is no excuse!  (Yes, relaxing is always on the list and the label maker was left behind…. for too long.)  Let’s see if “they” will pay attention to my “helpful hints”…..and make my day when I come back and see the organization….

Do you think that it’ll make a difference?

So I will share some of my organizing activities with you…..   NOW, I’m not saying that you necessarily do this in your Kitchen, unless it’s needed to keep you “organized”. My Kitchen at the BEACH is shared by many, so it’s necessary!

My fabulous label maker!

Working it....

Our Kitchen is well stocked!

Can you see my shadow on the counter top? LOL

Glasses of all kinds....these are the extras!

One section, DONE!

Don't forget the drawers!

Fresh picked!

I just love having a garden (even though the heat kinda ruined ours this year), frequenting farmer’s markets, and treating my family and friends with these fabulous finds in my Kitchen!  I recently visited Brown’s Farmers Market in Montezuma, GA.   www.williamlbrownfarms.com

Fresh Veggies!

Have you ever seen so much green in one place?  When you have such beautiful vegetables to choose from, it’s hard to make up your mind…..

More veggies....

Peppers, eggplant, squash, onions, tomatoes….  it just gets your heart racing with anticipation~ what can I buy and cook with these wonderfully fresh fruits and veggies!

Melons....

These watermelons are called Sugar Babies….they are small and seedless and very sweet.

More melons...

And are you looking for super sized cantaloupes?….tasty too!

Lots of beautiful tomatoes...

I buy green and red tomatoes so I can enjoy some “fried green tomatoes” and have the tomatoes at different stages of ripeness too.  We love the sizes that are just as big as the sandwich bread for fabulous BLT treats!

AND then there’s the Heirloom tomato – very tasty indeed!

The story of the Heirloom Tomato.

Peaches.....can't you just smell them?

Now THIS is why I make a trip back to my hometown on a regular basis this time of the year – Peaches!  I packed peaches for a Summer job when I was in High School and I have never had enough of them to eat.  You might say I’m a “peach snob” because I don’t buy these in the grocery store, only in Montezuma, GA and by the bushel!  If the peaches don’t have a wonderful aroma, they “ain’t good”!

I’m getting a little “low” and I have only a few more Red Globes left…..because  I made peach cobbler last night….yummy!

I’m heading down next week to get my favorite peach, the Elberta.  Yep, you are living right, if you have been treated to an Elberta….I’ll take my camera and show you on my next post…..because you can’t find them just anywhere.

Red Globe Peaches

Ice Cold Cokes!

This is also a special treat….an old icebox filled with cokes in the “glass bottle” that takes me back in time a bit.  My grandparents had a grocery store – Hammock’s Grocery there in that same area in Oglethorpe, GA – and we used to get our drinks (we never referred to them as soda, in the South) out of a simlar icebox.  The trick was to see if you could find your choice without your hand going numb in the search!  I would love to have an icebox at my house, too!

Ice cold watermelon.....

TTYL ….gotta go enjoy my watermelon….

Looking at DC

Noah, my 14 year old, and his 8th grade class went to Washington, DC for a field trip in the Spring.  I signed up to be a parent chaperone and really enjoyed the “fabulous history finds” there through the designer’s viewpoint.  We had a great time….

And with July 4th just around the corner, what a nice time to share a few of my thoughts, sights and details with you about the “Capital City”.

The flowers were in bloom and color was everywhere….

Beautiful blooms everywhere in DC...in the Spring.

Architectural elements at the National Cathedral and speaking of color....

I could have spent hours at the National Cathedral with my ears perked, listening to every guide's interpretations and details.

The magnificence of this architectural treasure was jaw dropping. That's Noah next to the awesome entry. Majestic in size was also more than I ever realized....

A beautiful wing of the cathedral....

Another view of the architectural elements of the entrance....

We all were "wowed" at the entrance to the interior.....I was so wishing to be able to come to a service here too!

I was so majorly overwhelmed with this beautiful treasure and I do have more pictures to share with you, and I was so taken back with the details, I will share more soon~

You Have the Power~

Do you have some unwanted items tucked away and don’t know what to do next?

Can you say

It’s a wonderful avenue to turn what you have termed your “trash” into someone elses “treasure”.  Don’t just hit the dumpster with those items unless they are in deed ready for the dumpster…   You have the power to handle your treasures with style~

There are other options that you may want to explore as well.  You may find some treasures of your own there too.  I usually do!  I call it “junking”, kinda like author, Mary Kay Andrews.  She loves finding those extra special character pieces, too.  They can be stores that sell “gently used items”, or antiques, or consignment stores.  Do your homework and check them out!  This can be time consuming, but to me, a lot of fun too!

LOVE this sign!

And if you’ve ever watched Antique Roadshow on TV, you might really do your homework before you “trash” something…..you never know if you have a valuable find. BUT, please don’t use this as an excuse to keep something that is of “no value” to you, personally.  There are great avenues to purge unwanted items in your home….as you can see…and have fun in the process.  It doesn’t seem so much like work on your to do list, does it?

I purchased 2 GREAT chairs and a few other pieces that I bought at a consignment store for our Beach House a number of years ago.  They had never been sat in and were in wonderful shape.  I built my color scheme around them and they have held up beautifully! Then I found a beautiful old square table at an “antique” store that works for my game table and these 2 old Captains chairs, painted to go with the table.  I love my finds…   Here’s one of my chairs~

My cozy and comfy chair in the Master Bedroom.

A great corner for the game table and chairs~I need to find a new little lamp....looking~

Those character pieces can be found at “recycled locations”, also known as antique shops, consignment shops, junk stores, or yard sales!  And you can create those character pieces for someone else by selling your “cast offs” there to them to recycle!

I have discovered a few new “treasures” places at the beach….check out some of my finds there…..

One of my "weaknesses" - Ruby Red Glass and Depression Glass.....

A fun leaf mirror and wooden wheel....

A colorful set of china with great bowls....

My shopping trip in Port St Joe, FL was centered on Reid Ave at Antiques and Things and more!

It’s a Way of Life….

This last weekend my friends, Crystal and Missy, and I participated in our annual “Girls Event”.  No, it was not a beach trip, or a Las Vegas getaway, it was on the University of Georgia Campus for Football 101 for Women!

Our opportunitiy for a "Kodak moment" and some autograph time during registration...

The day started at 8am with registration and gathering our bag of treats (a red and black Football 101 cloth bag).  Our GA “stuff” included a new T Shirt (it’s the trophy for the day) that is dated for 2011  and a certificate of attendance.  Woof Woof!

The "Dancing with the Stars" winner is one of many Bulldogs that have played in the professional status too....

Then it’s a picture moment with Coach Mark Richt, head football coach.  All of the football coaches participate with Offense, Defense, or Special Teams, along with the Assistants, Grad Assistants, Trainers and Players.

The new "indoor field" was a great retreat from the heat!

We chose Defense again this year and worked hard with Coach Grantham, running drills and learning the inside scoop on many plays that are the heart and soul of the GA De-Fense!  I played and practiced for the Right Tackle position.

3 former Bulldogs, who have retired from their pro teams, have returned to help with the Bulldogs "way of life".....

We had lunch and had guest speakers, visited the locker room, the work out area, the lounge for the players and toured the new experiences at the Butts-Mehr building with great newly designed spaces for the team and all the people that are involved with the athletic programs.  And guess what their color scheme is!  RED AND BLACK – YOU are right!

Finish the Drill is the motto!

And finally at the end of the day…..we scrimmaged.  Yep, it was 97 degrees on Saturday and we were scrimmaging on the practice field in the heat!  AND the DEFENSE won!  Oh yeah, baby, it’s a way of life!  We look forward to this event every year, and we have participated every year but the very first (because we didn’t know!) one.  With 350 women attending every year, we have now endowed a scholarship….

“They” filmed us all day long and I can’t wait to get my DVD for the day’s events, conversations, work out drills, and interviews.   So,the story continues… and I will be registering for my next Football 101 event….just about the time football season starts!

Do I hear a GO DAWGS!?

Memorial Day….remember

I think it’s easy to look at Memorial Day with vacation plans and cookouts – yes, it’s a Holiday!  AND it’s the start of the Summer season for many of us.  And yes, I am also looking at those fun times in my weekend plans too…..don’t get me wrong…..

BUT, it’s also a time for remembering our soldiers in all wars who have given us our freedom and that protect us on a daily basis right now.  I think of my dad and my father in law….they both were soldiers in WW2.  It meant so much to them for “people” to just say “Thank you” to them for serving.

When Noah and I visited Washington DC on his 8th grade field trip, we were particularly interested in these memorials for the many that have given the ultimate sacrifice….Noah was able to look up his grandfathers at the memorial there, too.  He was thrilled to be at the WW2 Memorial – it is very impressive.  We were there at night….

From the Air Force Memorial in Washington DC. Noah is standing in front of the soldier memorial.

The World War 2 Memorial was quite impressive at night....with the Washington Monument in the background.

We also have a lot of friends and family that have connections with their military families as well….  AND Brian, one of our sons, is serving in the Navy right now.

Memorials....

another view at this famous memorial...

from the Vietnam War Memorial...

The many veterans buried at Arlington Cemetary and a funeral procession on this particular day....

a wonderful tribute ....it really got Noah's attention at the Viet Nam Memorial

Remember….

A Bit of Royalty in My World….

Just on cue, I received a wonderful bit of the Royal couple’s frenzy in the mail….a new cookbook.  BUT wait, this isn’t just any ‘ole cookbook!  It’s a little bit of a fairy tale for the author of the cookbook  and into my hands….

Let me set the scene a bit for you.

You see, I am one of those die hard romantics that got up in the middle of the night to watch Princess Diana’s wedding.  I was a bit obsessed with the details of the wedding itself – the music, the dress, the royal family, the beautiful cathedral….all of it.  There were no DVRs in those days….  So, it was such a “fairy tale” then and now we get to be included in Prince William’s Royal Wedding!  (This time I did record it so that I can watch it again!  Nice…)

Eating Royally!

This wonderful cookbook is filled with beautiful stories of the royal family and recipes, not to mention the photography is just “to die for”.  The author, Darren McGrady, was the chef to the Royal Family.

And with the Royal Wedding this week, it’s like this “meant to be” shipment happened.  It arrives in the mail, from my friend Ruth Riddle Thompson.  You see, Ruth and I grew up together in our small communities, Montezuma and Oglethorpe, in Middle Georgia.  Now with the wonderful connections of Facebook, we have been chatting about many things. Darren (chef and author) is Ruth’s friend and is involved in her Culinary School in McKinney, TX and she asked me if I would like his cookbook, after reading several of my posts.  Are you kidding me?  YES, I would LOVE the cookbook!

Autographed..... To Cumby!

AND it’s autographed to me!  Did you see that?  Happy Cooking!  Oh yeah….I’m very excited to have this wonderful book in my collection and read the beautiful stories of the royal family.  I feel very honored….   THANK YOU Ruth and Darren!

I understand that Prince William loved chocolate cake (just like most of us!)  and his favorite, The Chocolate Biscuit Cake, is in the cookbook and was his Groom’s Cake!  Are you getting chill bumps yet?  I think this is sooooo cool!  So many wonderful and delicious recipes are featured here.  I am looking forward to trying several that jump out at me!

Chocolate surrounded by other yummy treats....

And Darren appeared on Oprah this week to talk about his career and his passion for cooking, that started in the palace as a Junior chef, peeling carrots for the horses!  He was a part of their lives for many years, as a result of starting there with those carrot duties.

My little piece of heaven with the Royal Wedding….

Fish Tales….

My guys just love to fish and Noah may have it just a little bit more in his DNA than most.  In fact, he’s thinking about finding a college and being on their “fishing team” too! Yes, they do have fishing teams – we’ve seen them on fishing tournaments on ESPN~  We have enjoyed his spirit and his passion for this sport, too (he loves and plays a lot of sports, by the way).  David loves to fish too, and he’s so glad that Noah has his fondness for the sport as well…

Last Summer, the catch. He's wearing his "lucky fishing hat".

Now, he’ll fish any where and at any time, but one of his favorites is the local “fishing hole” on the property at Barrier Dunes, at our beach home property.  He’s been fishing this spot since he was old enough to hold a pole.  When we drive up, he is out there with his fishing tackle and pole in hand in less than 15 minutes.

Check it out, with a broken ankle, 3 years ago, the catch!

Over the last few years, he’s been old enough to go down the street by himself and hang out there for hours.  I take him a “bite” for lunch and some Powerade, because he can’t leave for too long, ya know?  I’m sure you are starting to get the picture – he’s consumed with fishing and I do think that it’s good for the soul.

We’ve taken many a picture of him there at the same spot over the years….and he’s been in pursuit of the “big boy”.   David and I have heard many a story about the almosts and that he just got off my hook…. Man, he wants this fish badly~

Noah and Andrew fishing on a beautiful day at the lake....

Noah brought his friend, Andrew, with him on our Spring Break trip and he has the passion for fishing as well….we’ve hardly seen them with their all day long trips to the lakes….there are 3 on the property here.

Yesterday, the door flew open and he yelled “Mama, I got him – get the camera!” and I took off with my camera down the street to chronicle this “magical moment”.  He was successful and hooked the “big boy” – a BIG large mouth bass, weighing in @ 9.5lbs and 25inches long – but the “big boy” is really a “big Mama”.  We measured and documented for his “trophy fish mount”.

Noah and Andrew enjoying the moment with the BIG catch!

Yes, there was a lot of drama and gloating, smiles and “Kodak moments” but Noah decided to let her go, to go back to her favorite spot, swim a little longer and tempt a few more fishermen with her savvy elusiveness in the lake….  Noah respects his competitor.

The BIG Fisherman!

I’m the proud Mama of a great fisherman!
